Error 00265 - Instance recovery [message #294799]

Guys,

I am getting this error when trying to set my database in Archivelog mode

Error 00265 - instance recovery required, cannot set ARCHIVELOG mode

Here are the steps I did

- Startup mount
- alter database dbase archivelog

What is the reason for this?
What remedial steps should be taken?

startup
shutdown immediate
startup mount
The command is
alter database archivelog;

I did exactly as you said..but the problem still persists

MAGIC.....

IT WORKED....now atleast tell me why it did not happen before and why now..what exactly is instance recovery.?

Hope this may the same solution if I come across the problem in 10g.

No magic, Either you issued shutdown abort or something abnormal things happened to database , like power off suddenly.
