Hi,
I was taught that recovery catalog are used if I want to retain a lot of history information about backup. When recovering a database using RMAN, I have not been using the recovery catalog. Is it recommended to use recovery catalog to recover db if it is used during backup? Is there any downside for not using it during recovery? Please educate me.

Thanks

Recovery catalog is not a must. But using one has a marginal advantage as you can make use of certain features. Using a recovery catalog is justified, if you are backing up many databases and using features like cloning.
