i'm lil confused about rman's obsolete backups.

i have set revovery window of 8 days, and my control_file_record_keep_time is 10 days.
rman is storing two backupprices in each backup set.
eg. O1_MF_NCSN1_TAG20071107T040139_3M308D9L_.BKP-- this is control file and spfile backup
and O1_MF_NNND1_TAG20071107T040139_3M2ZQMX6_.BKP-- this is datafiles backup.

so when i run report obsolete it only shows O1_MF_NCSN1_TAG20071107T040139_3M308D9L_.BKP as obsolete (which is older than 8 days, and does not show O1_MF_NNND1_TAG20071107T040139_3M2ZQMX6_.BKP as obsolete( itz also older than 8 days)

So i have to manualy delete the other backup piece every day.

Does anyone know why rman doesn't consider datafile backup as obsolete.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It may be needed to restore the database at a date earlier than 8 days even if it is older than 8 days.

Obsolete does not mean "older than" but "not necessary to restore a database younger than".

For instance, if you specify a retention of 8 days and take a backup each Sunday then backup of 2 Sundays before (the one from 11/04 today) is necessary even it is 12 days old.

Yes, you ask him to retain all what is necessary to restore a database 8 days before (this is your retention policy), so it applies it.
