I tried the following:

rman target / (no catalog)
set DBID=xxxxxxxx
startup nomount;
restore controlfile from TAG=xxxxxxxxx

and got the rman errors.
Any idea why I can't do that except we can do
restore controlfile from 'c\backup\...\....'; ?
