Hi all,

I have a problem trying to perform a database backup; I receive the following error message:

Backup of the database failed.
Unknown log mode : SP2-0640:.
Log file is at SP2-0640:.

And nothing happend after that. I make a search in google, lycos, yahoo, etc. but there is nothing related to this error.

I´m using Oracle XE, running on Microsoft XP professional SP2.

Please help me.

Can You provide more info.
like
how can you take backup.
1. rman
2. user managed bkp.
or something else.

check ur alertsid.log file there any error. encountered.

ur database is archive log mode. or no archivelog mode.

Hello Mohammad,

I'm using the procedure provided by oracle (user managed backup) by selecting start->programs->Oracle 10g XE->Backup database.

I already checked the alert log file but there is no error message in it.

My database is in archive log mode.

Run,

Select log_mode from v$database;

And see your current log mode. If you are running in noarchive mode you cant perform online backup.

I have the archivelog mode running.
the oracle client was install on this server
I have removed the client

in the css.log
[ OCRUTL][6928]u_set_com_error: parameter was NULL
[ OCRUTL][6928]u_set_ocr_error: parameter was NULL
[ OCROSD][6928]utgdv:1:could not open registy key SOFTWARE\Oracle\ocr os err the system could not find the enviroment option that was entered.

I think environmental variable missing. Reinstall of oracle may solve the problem.

You must run backup with user with which you have installed OracleXE!
Or should be memeber of ORA_DBA group (About this I'm not sure)

Hi there,

I had the same error message when I tried to run the Oracle 10g XE Edition's backup from the Windows Start Menu, i.e.

==================== ERROR =============================
Backup of the database failed.
Unknown log mode : SP2-0640:.
Log file is at SP2-0640:.
==================== ERROR =============================

It turned out I got this because I'd not started up the database. Ensure your XE database has been started up before you run the backup from the Windows Start Menu. Embarassed

Start oracle server using Windows- Start -> Program files -> Oracle 10g -> Start database.

Even if services are started.

Good information.

Rather than log out of my user account and back in as the administrator account used to instal Oracle XE I did the following:

Opened Start -> Programs -> Oracle Database 10g Express Edition and then right clicked Backup Database. Select Properties from the context menu. In the Backup Database Properties dialog box under Shortcut tab prepend the target with "runas /user:<login> " without the quotes where <login> is the Windows user that installed Oracle.

Now when you click Backup Database you will get a prompt for the password for <login> and the database will backup normally.
