explain the significance of hoststring in oracle?

Hi,
In Oracle Hostring will always use to identify the database to connect. Ideally you can have one or more number of databases in a Server with different instances. The significance of Hostring here is to connect the database as specified in oracle_home/network/admin/tnsnames.ora file.
