Hi All,
I was handed a folder that consists of all the files (Datafiles, controlfiles, spfiles, backupsets etc) for a database. The SID is Oracle.

So now I have two options:
1. Attach the Datafiles
2. Restoring the Database with the Backupsets.

Option 1:
I tried with working with the control files but didnt get anywhere because I did not understand how to attach the datafiles (I tried modifying the control file, to no avail).

I do have an idea tho, I tried replacing the spfiles and pfile then copying the datafiles (replacing the existing ones)...but I could not create the control file as well...

Option 2:
I do not know how to make RMAN see the backupsets of the Old database; despite they are in the same location as those of the new database.

Everypart of me want to use the Backupsets. What am I doing wrong?

Arm wrestling with a COMPLEX software application (Oracle RDBMS) & not knowing enough to be productive.

What Operating System name & version?

post FULL directory listing of the file you have to work with.

You are going to need the EXACT same version of Oracle software that generated the files

Guess! You cannot do it by just guessing how to do it, you have to first studying the product.
All the answers to your both ways are in:
Database Concepts
Database SQL Reference
Database Backup and Recovery Basics
Database Backup and Recovery Reference
Database Backup and Recovery Advanced User's Guide

Michel

My O/S : windows XP service pack 3
directory:
c:\app\Private\~
subfolders:
\admin
\flash_recovery_area
\oracle\backupset\<all backupsets>
\oradata
\Oracle\<all data and control files>
\product
\diag
\cfgtoollogs
\product

The Backupsets are in the folders named by date done.

The scenario is that I was working on one machine and left and went accross to another. Copy all my files and formatted the drive. So now I wish ti set back up the environment. I installed the Oracle database(same Oracle SID) and used same directory structure.

Thanks.

Michel,
I do backup and recovery all the time but has never had to move the database. This is new to me. I read those guides and they do not assist me in my current situation.
When I tell RMAN
LIST BACKUPS
I see only the backup belonging to the new database, not those from the old that I copied over.

This scanario is moving the database to a new host and using the RMAN backupsets to restore to Normalcy.

It would be helpful if you followed Posting Guidelines - http://www.orafaq.com/forum/t/88153/0/

were the backups hot or cold backups?

OK.
Here is an exact printout from RMAN when I issue List backup
To my knowledge once I cant see backups listed then RMAN doesnt consider it a valid backup (or it's not even in its repository):

RMAN> list backup
2> ;

using target database control file instead of recovery catalog

I cannot see the following files(backupsets):
O1_MF_NCSNF_TAG20110505T094507_6W57125V_.BKP
O1_MF_NCSNF_TAG20110509T075655_6WHL656C_.BKP

O1_MF_NNNDF_TAG20110520T084657_6XDO65KL_.BKP

These are from the previous(old) database.

And what is the difference between recovery on the same server and recovery on another server?
By the way, this is a scenario that is explained in details in the books you said you read.

Michel

I hope Michel and BS will forgive me for butting in, but I think I see your mistake. You say
Quote:
I installed the Oracle database(same Oracle SID) and used same directory structure.

but I think what you did was:
1. install the Oracle home - correct
2. create a database - wrong
I think that if you delete all the datafiles, tempfiles, controlfiles, and online logs on your new machine, and then replace them with the files from the original database, you may then have a working database.
The alternative is to use RMAN to create a duplicate of the database, which will require a lot more understanding: read up on creating a duplicate without a connection to the target.

John,
I did that and the database refused to start. I will do same again and print the error I received in my next post.
Bottom line, it did not work.

errors are captured in alert_SID.log file
