Hi, I am testing one of the recovery scenarios whereby I am trying to restore database to a different server. Here are my variables:

1. We take hot backups via RMAN
2. We use RMAN catalog
3. Oracle version between db where the backup was taken is
different (10.2.4) from the version where I am trying to
restore this backup (10.2.3).
4. Every hot backup includes archivelogs, spfile and
controlfile backup
5. I will be using nocatalog during thie restore.

I have two questions:

a) Can I restore to a different server is the versions of Oracle are different - 10.2.4 and 10.2.3?

b) Can anyone point me to some clear documentation that describes how to restore to a different server from hotbakup?

thank you!

no

http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14194/toc.htm

How would RMAN know whether it is same or different server & why would it care?

For one thing datafiles are located in different directories on this other server. Docs are confusing - I am not sure if I am supposed to follow docs that describe cloning db to another server or restoring (where you import your RMAN catalog, etc). I am trying to simulate disaster recovery scenario where my database server is not available and I got RMAN hot backup + archivelogs + spfile + controlfile with that backup. So I want to restore it to another server. What makes sense in this situation?

Thank you!

p.s but if the versions are different, I cannot restore period?

Yes and no.

Chances are that it will work - but the question is "would you really do this" in a real disaster?

You should have the correct versions of Oracle installed on your failover nodes - there really arnt any excuses.

Well, we have over 100 databases, some run 10.2.3, some 10.2.4 some are still on 9i. I only have one "failover" test server with 10.2.4. on it..

I have not restored to a different server yet. This is the first time I am trying to do it. I am just trying to figure out the best way to go about this and follow recommended guidelines.

On your test system, you can/should have multiple ORACLE_HOME directories; one for each version that exists in Production.

If so, then you could restore any Production DB onto the test system.
