Hi guys,
I would like to know the percentage decrease in performance, compared to normal running, while a database is in backup mode.
Also, is there a difference if backup is done using SQL commands compared to using RMAN?

It is next to impossible to give even a rough estimated "percentage" without knowing your system,database,hardware and available resources.
If properly done, it would be minimal. In most of the shops, backup is done only in off hours.
If you are using 10g and above, RMAN could be configured to be
somewhat "load aware". You can ask RMAN to "appropriately use allocated resources" during "backup window" and hence reducing the load on database
