Hi all,
My backup procedure is differential level 0 once a week and differential level 1 on the other days as follows,

Fri Sat Sun Mon Tue Wed Thur Fri
Incremental Level 0 - - - - - - 0
Incremental Level - 1 1 1 1 1 1 -

If the retention policy is set to redundancy 2 and on sunday when the incremental level 1 backup starts, will the incremental level 0 and level 1 backups taken on friday and saturday be deleted? Please clarify my doubt.

Thanks,
Arun.

No.
They will be deleted 2 weeks later as incrementals don't contain the whole files.

Hi Michel,
Thanks for the reply..Once i tested the backup procedure using a test server and found that after i took the level 0 and level 1 backups and issued the RMAN command ,
'Delete Noprompt Obsolete;'
There were some backup pieces(obsolete) getting deleted. I doubted that this happened as i kept the redundancy level to 2. So, what might be the reason Michel??

Thanks,
Arun.

From doc:
Quote:
If you specify the OBSOLETE option, then DELETE removes files considered OBSOLETE, that is, "not needed," by the retention policy or because it is orphaned.

Michel, I dont understand what you mean here by the term "...because it is orphaned..." , what does it mean?

Thanks and Regards,
Arun.

You should read the documentation.

Orphan means it is unusable because something is missing to use it.
For instance, an incremental level 1 is unusable if there is no previous available level 0.
