Hi Friends,
I decided to test incremental backups ie., level 0 and level 1 on the test server. The size of the test server was 45 gb. When i ran the RMAN script which took incremental level 0 backup and archivelog backup, i found the total size of the backups being taken to be only around 18GB.
I was confused because the DB size is 45 Gb but the size of backups taken is only 18 GB(thought that level 0 amounts to full DB backup). Please clarify this.
Also I want to know whether it is required to take the full backup using Backup Database command, before going for the level 0 backups?

RMAN does not backup blocks that were never used.

Thanks Michel. I also want to know if the level 0 backup is same as taking the full database backup?

In 10g, yes.
In 9i, iirc, you can only do incremental backup on level 0 and not on full.

To add,
the size of backupsets generated will depend on the activities on
the databases.
Operations like insert/update/delete may generate more redo ending as more archived logs.
